Close your eyes and imagine diving into the clear blue waters of South Caicos, and being face to face with the humans of the ocean. Swimming with schools of fish, and the monstrous whale shark. White hot sand clinging to your wet feet with every step you take. Blazing sun kissing your skin and leaving behind the perfect tan. Now open your eyes and stop imagining, and make this dream real.
From my first swimming lesson to my first year in high school (right now) I have always been interested with any body of water, especially the ocean. I grew up always going to beaches with my family and going fishing or lobstering with my dad. I spent a lot of time in and near the water. When I would go to the beach I wouldn't just lay in the sun or make sand castles, I would explore. I would go to the rocks and search for anything I could find.

My dad started taking me fishing when I was just a little girl. Teaching me how to cast, put the worm on the right way, and get the biggest fish out there! I had my little fishing pole which was only catching sun fish, while my dad, sister, brother and grandfather had the "big" fishing poles. They would reel in what my grandfather would call "big bubba!" Big Bubba means the biggest fish.
My dad also use to take my sister and I on his boat to go pull up the lobster traps. We would go to the loading dock to put his boat in the water. I remember the first time I ever saw a jelly fish outside of the aquarium. It was when we were about to go out of the "no wake zone" I would hang my head over the side of the boat and look for fish swimming, hoping to see a shark. But I saw these weird little things that looked like little plastic bags in the water. but they were moving! They were jellyfish! I was so happy. I mean what little kid wouldn't be? But as we were pulling up the traps I would think to myself what it would be like to explore under the ocean. To see what Marine life and the ocean was all about.
As years past I discovered Marine Sciences, or Biology. I would watch people go diving in the most amazing places I've ever seen. Clear blue waters with white sand. I mean, you don't get to see that here in New England. You see dark colored sand with green, dark waters not being able to see what is below the water.
Skipping ahead a few years my grandparents had moved to Florida. Perfect for Marine science! Well I was lucky enough that I got to go visit them. When I got there we went to an island not to far from where they live. Pine island, where the water is bath warm and dolphins swim on the shoreline. Well I was in the water with my cousin and two dolphins swam right up to us. They were so close that I could touch them. Touching a wild dolphin, well I mean it was pretty awesome.
Going back to the beginning, even when I was a little girl I loved the ocean. Always wanting to explore and discover. Now that I am older I know there is multiple fields for studying the ocean. I have been looking into Marine Biology but I also want to keep looking for different fields that I may be interested in. I'm ready to jump into the deep waters of Marine Science and discover, plan, and create what my future will be.
Just a thought...
I really wish that my school was a passion driven school. It’s a change that some people may not think is the best. But how do you know if you don’t try it? Take the kids that are bored in class and have them go into a passion driven school. I feel like if we had this in Maine kids would wake up in the morning and be happy and excited to go into school. In normal school we are taught to compete. Who has the best grades, who is smarter, faster, and who aces what test. We are trained to compete, and when we lose or fail we become distraught.
