diving back, swimming foward.

Close your eyes and imagine diving into the clear blue waters of South Caicos, and being face to face with the humans of the ocean. Swimming with schools of fish, and the monstrous whale shark. White hot sand clinging to your wet feet with every step you take. Blazing sun kissing your skin and leaving behind the perfect tan. Now open your eyes and stop imagining, and make this dream real.

From my first swimming lesson to my first year in high school (right now) I have always been interested with any body of water, especially the ocean. I grew up always going to beaches with my family and going fishing or lobstering with my dad. I spent a lot of time in and near the water.  When I would go to the beach I wouldn't just lay in the sun or make sand castles, I would explore. I would go to the rocks and search for anything I could find.

My dad started taking me fishing when I was just a little girl. Teaching me how to cast, put the worm on the right way, and get the biggest fish out there! I had my little fishing pole which was only catching sun fish, while my dad, sister, brother and grandfather had the "big" fishing poles. They would reel in what my grandfather would call "big bubba!" Big Bubba means the biggest fish.
My dad also use to take my sister and I on his boat to go pull up the lobster traps. We would go to the loading dock to put his boat in the water. I remember the first time I ever saw a jelly fish outside of the aquarium. It was when we were about to go out of the "no wake zone" I would hang my head over the side of the boat and look for fish swimming, hoping to see a shark. But I saw these weird little things that looked like little plastic bags in the water. but they were moving! They were jellyfish! I was so happy. I mean what little kid wouldn't be? But as we were  pulling up the traps I would think to myself what it would be like to explore under the ocean. To see what Marine life and the ocean was all about.

As years past I discovered Marine Sciences, or Biology.  I would watch people go diving in the most amazing places I've ever seen. Clear blue waters with white sand. I mean, you don't get to see that here in New England.  You see dark colored sand with green, dark waters not being able to see what is below the water.

Skipping ahead a few years my grandparents had moved to Florida. Perfect for Marine science! Well I was lucky enough that I got to go visit them. When I got there we went to an island not to far from where they live. Pine island, where the water is bath warm and dolphins swim on the shoreline. Well I was in the water with my cousin and two dolphins swam right up to us.  They were so close that I could touch them. Touching a wild dolphin, well I mean it was pretty awesome.

Going back to the beginning, even when I was a little girl I loved the ocean. Always wanting to explore and discover. Now that I am older I know there is multiple fields for studying the ocean. I have been looking into Marine Biology but I also want to keep looking for different fields that I may be interested in. I'm ready to jump into the deep waters of Marine Science and discover, plan, and create what my future will be.

Just a thought...

I really wish that my school was a passion driven school.  It’s a change that some people may not think is the best. But how do you know if you don’t try it? Take the kids that are bored in class and have them go into a passion driven school. I feel like if we had this in Maine kids would wake up in the morning and be happy and excited to go into school. In normal school we are taught to compete. Who has the best grades, who is smarter, faster, and who aces what test. We are trained to compete, and when we lose or fail we become distraught.

no matter what; be strong.

Last year I had a very serious unknown illness. It sort of just came on.
In my twitter bio I stated I wanted to make a difference in the world. I think I have an idea on how to do this. Even if it is the littlest way. I just hate to see people hurt while i'm living a good life. What makes them different from me. Why aren't they living the good life also?

In the video below you'll see me describing what was happening to me and how I felt. And how I saw and see things. Self brought on  anorexia is something that needs to stop, everyone is beautiful in their own way. You don't have to be a size zero model to be pretty. You are you. You are unique. I hope everyone can take something away from this video and help make a difference.

what I want my PLN to be.

I would really like to study Marine Biology or Forensic science. These topics are really important for me to study because they are what I want to study when I get  into collage. Something I want to base my life around. I have always been interested in these sciences. Marine more the forensics but they still are important for my future. Because I want to be successful in my future!

Keepin' it clean.

Last week I went on a field trip to the beach with my class, it was coastal cleanup week. We found a ton of trash on the beach but picked it up to make it a better and safer place for everyone. Below is a little tour on how the day went and what we found.

When we first got to the beach, such a nice day! Not a cloud in sight!

We had multiple groups spread out along the beach, one of the groups found a bunch of metal rods.
Its crazy to think that people do not clean up after themselves.

Beautiful waves rolling in on Hermit Island! Keep the ocean clean.

Abandon surfboard. Please  pick up after yourself! Stop being lazy people.

A nice ending to a hard working day, Dairy Queen!

Go to your local beach and help keep it clean!

What does it mean to be human?

What does it mean to be human, to live on this Earth and be human? Why are we here, why can I write this paper and you are able to read it? Where did the mind come from, why do we have one? Why are we able to walk, talk, touch, and feel? This is not a matter of how these questions are answered, it’s a matter of if these questions can be answered. What does it even mean to be human?
As humans we make mistakes that we learn and grow from.  If the first people on earth never made a mistake then we would never know what was wrong. But would they be human if the never made one? As humans I believe we all make mistakes, no matter who you are. We learn from our mistakes, we learn to grow from our mistakes. Our mistakes help us define ourselves as individuals.

Look down, or all around you. This wasn’t all created with a magic wand. We walk on what you know as feet, but we also walk on civilization that was made from scratch. Without mistakes our rise and fall of building this civilization would of never happened. Who knows what the world would be if everything was perfect. It wouldn’t be a world. Nothing is perfect. People have flaws, disabilities and illnesses. People die because of these things. Like I said, Nothing is perfect, our world, our Earth, and humans are not perfect.

Each day we are guided through life, we take care of family and we help our environment. We learn to have fun with our life, while we still have responsibilities. I asked a young boy who is 5 what is means to be human just to get some insight on what a younger child thinks. “To have different bones, and a brain then other animals do”  he said. Just doing what you do everyday involves our bones, and our brain. With out any of these we wouldn’t be here. This is from a child's point of  view.

We are human because we have emotions, actions, and  have the ability to solve problems. We have so many mechanisms that other species don’t have and that makes us uniquely human. The questions that I asked in the beginning cannot be answered. You have to answer them yourself. Because YOU are HUMAN.

Do the consequences of being bored in school lead to failing?

Most schools have a standardized routine that they follow. But what if we all jumped out of our comfort zone with school? What would happen? Could school actually be less boring for children? Every school you go to I can almost  guarantee that at least one child is failing. We all have the power to know, and to think. Some people do not choose to use these skills that we have. But If we took a step back and looked at the big picture on why these kids are failing then we would come to realize that the standardized routine needs to be changed.

Kids are bored of just sitting in a boxed up room all day raising their hand about some complex curriculum written on the board. Reading out of text books all day and taking a test at the end of the year. Do you realize that is approximately 175 days of learning something each day, and you decide to test us the last week of school on it all? People have said "dear alphabet, I liked you better when you weren't in my math homework, sincerely failing." This is the type of attitude kids have about learning. Kids, especially teenagers in their high school years want something new. Something that will always be a new learning experience.

What if we learned by choice, things that interest you. Do you ever think why your students do not try? They are not interested in what geological or mathematical term is coming out of your mouth. They think it is irrelevant to what they need to know in life.  Therefore they chose to take what they think is the easy way out.  But in reality it’s so much harder than just doing things right the first time. If you do it right the first time then it can go by easy. Study, think, and do. You need to think that throughout your high school, middle school, or even collage.

I am going to use myself as an example, I am really interested in taking a career in Marine biology or forensic science so why not start focusing on one of the main things that will drive me to succeed in life. Give me assignments that relate to my future dreams to help them become reality. Of course you would still teach what is required to graduate, but in a new way. I am talking about going on field trips, have speakers come to classes and have them tell the students what it was like while the war was going on. Make it an every day experience. Something that they will not forget over the summer. You can do this while you focus on their dreams.

Being in school and seeing what kids choose to go through makes me want to try even harder. Now I try my best in school and always have, and I have done very well in all my years of being in school. But it is very hard not to notice the kids who do not do well and do not do anything to fix that. I also see some teachers just give up on those students, instead of pushing them to excellence.
What I am saying is, use what these kids want to do in their future as another class, do go on field trips, do have people come to the school and explain what happened in the time period you are talking about. This may not change the drop out rate but It seems like it could help. Make these kids want to go to school make them strive for their goal. Make them successful. We all have the power to think, know and succeed.
